Mount Athos and the whole peninsula is « Sites of Community Protection » Natura 2000.
This is one of the highest mountains of Greece with the peak of the 2033 meters at the N end of the Athos peninsula, or « Coast » as the ancients.
According to mythology, Athos was one of the giants, the son of Heaven and Earth. When Giants among Giants and Gods, Athos grabbed a rock and threw it against the Gods.
However, he fell on the edge of Halkidiki, the peninsula was the top of which took its name.
